The Legend of the Smokin’ Butt

The world’s best tobacco-growing area is located in the Vuelta Abajo, part of the Pinar del Rio region on the western side of Cuba. This mountainous, rocky area provides vast valleys with luscious soil perfect for growing the tobacco that made Cuba synonymous with cigars. Because of the rocky landscape, the valleys were difficult to access. Tobacco farmers would descend into the valley carrying all of their equipment since it was nearly impossible to get any large machines down there. Donkeys, or burros, became the main mode of transporting the tobacco leaves from the field to the factory because of their strength in carrying heavy loads and ability to navigate the rocky terrain.

In the crisp air of the early morning, tobacco farmers in the valley could see the breath of the donkeys as they ascended the mountains to transport the crops. Many old farmers commented that the donkeys were actually smoking the fine, lush tobacco, hence creating the “Smokin’ Butt” legend.

It is in this tradition that the Smokin’ Butt Cigar Company was founded. Based on the long history and pride in true cigar making, we will not compromise quality at any cost.
